Del.icio.us (pronounced “delicious”) is one of my favorite social bookmarking sites. Basically, it’s a place for you to save, or “bookmark,” interesting sites that you’ve visited so you can return to them later. You also have the option of sharing your bookmarks with others.

When you bookmark a page, you can change the name and add a description and keywords, or “tags,” if you desire. These can really come in handy for searching when the number of sites you bookmark start adding up.

Using Del.icio.us

To begin saving and sharing your bookmarks, you’ll need a free del.icio.us account. Click here to sign up. Once you create your account, you can import existing bookmarks from your browser(s) and/or begin creating new bookmarks.

There are many useful tools that you can implement with del.icio.us. If you are using Firefox as a web browser, there are a number of plugins that you can add. The “Delicious Bookmarks” add-on is a nice one. Another good one is the del.icio.us Firefox extension.

You can also add a link in your browser’s bookmarks bar that allows you to quickly save the site you are visiting to your del.icio.us bookmarks. These are called “bookmarklets” and are available here.

Sharing Your Del.icio.us Bookmarks

There are a number of tools available on the del.icio.us website that allow you to share your bookmarks with others on your blog or website. To access these tools, sign up for a free del.icio.us account. Once you have an account and you are logged in, click “settings” in the upper right of the del.icio.us website. Then explore the options under the “Blogging” menu.
